Food 'cheapest in Bulgaria'

Bulgaria has come out top of a new survey of the European Union (EU) countries in terms of cheap prices for alcohol and food.

On average, those living in Bulgaria pay 44% less for such groceries that those in other EU countries, the survey from Eurostat found, reported by novinite.com.

In addition, people in the country pay 30% less on average on alcohol than those in other nations while tobacco goods are available at 50% less.

Such news may be welcomed by potential property developers looking to move to the country.

By comparison, the highest levels for alcohol in the EU were in Ireland, which showed 181% of the EU average and the United Kingdom, where prices are 152% higher than the average.

In related news, a recent drive in Bulgaria to increase energy efficiency has gained support from European Bank for Reconstruction and Development who lent 5 million euros (£3.38 million) to MKB Unionbank to aid this process.
