Foreign holiday 'cures post-winter blues'
Millions of Britons are planning to try to escape the British winter by heading abroad in the new year, new research has found.
A study by Sainsbury's Bank revealed that almost 12 million people were set to try to overcome the post-Christmas blues by booking a holiday for January and February.
The firm also found that almost one in four Britons were set to make a reservation within the next few days, with Londoners said to be the most likely to book early.
In addition, Sainsbury's estimated that those heading abroad during January and February would spend an average of £655 each.
However, more than one in ten leisure travellers were found to be willing to spend as much as £1,000 on their trip.
The findings come amid a busy period for the travel industry, as numerous firms in the sector have recorded an increase in the number of Britons spending Christmas abroad.
According to the Co-operative Bank, this year's number of festive holidaymakers is 11% higher than the figure recorded in 2006.
