French tourist sector still strong

The strong euro has not had a negative impact on the French tourist sector, according to official data.

Luc Chatel, France's tourism and consumer affairs secretary, was quoted by Reuters as saying that a record number of people visited the country in 2007.

He predicted that the overall figure for the year would come to more than 80 million people.

Mr Chatel said: "France is going to set a record in 2007."

This is despite the impact of the strong euro, which had prompted some experts to predict that people living outside the eurozone would opt to visit a less expensive destination.

The figures will also prove to be good news for investors in the French property market, particularly owners of rental accommodation in popular tourist regions.

France has recently attracted considerable attention from British investors as a result of the introduction of a high-speed rail link between London and Paris.

Eurostar's new service allows people to travel between the two cities in two hours and 15 minutes.
