Global tourism strong despite economic problems

Ongoing economic problems across the world have not severely impacted upon international tourism, an industry group has revealed.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) said the sector has seen a "solid performance" last year, with the overall number of holidaymakers going up.

This is despite the continuing crisis in the global economy, which has led to fears of a possible worldwide recession.

Almost 900 million tourists chose to venture overseas during 2007 - 6% more than during the previous year.

Commenting on the findings, WTTC president Jean-Claude Baumgarten stated the growth in tourism was having a positive effect on the most popular holiday destinations.

He said: "These countries are recognising the development potential of travel and tourism and therefore investing heavily in new infrastructure and facilities."

Mr Baumgarten added that economic growth in these locations was also boosting the wealth of local people.
