Golf tourism "flourishing" in Portugal

Portugal's status as a top golf destination is helping to attract more holidaymakers and boosting the country's property market, according to a report.

Since the Portuguese government identified golf as one of ten key areas in its national tourism strategy, the country has accelerated its development into a golfing destination of international repute.

The European Tour website states that the recent success of professional events such as the Portugal Masters, which was won by Spanish player Alvaro Quiros in Vilamoura last month, has contributed to the "flourishing golfing culture" of Portugal.

As a result, the nation is now an "international destination of choice for golf fans and holidaymakers".

The website reports that more than 300,000 people now visit Portugal's golf resorts each year, generating 25 per cent of the country's overall tourism revenue.

A new set of flights from Ryanair means that Portugal has become even more accessible from the UK, with the low-cost airline recently announcing additional routes to Faro from Glasgow, Liverpool and East Midlands Airport.
