Greater wealth fuels migration

Increasing personal wealth is driving the growing trend of migration from the UK, experts have stated.

According to figures from the Institute for Public Policy Research, more than 5.5 million British nationals now reside abroad.

Jill Rutter, a senior migration researcher at the organisation, said this is partly because people have more money than at any time in the past.

As a result, Britain is currently in the middle of the "greatest period of emigration" it has ever seen.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Ms Rutter commented: "A lot of this is people retiring abroad, which is a relatively new phenomenon and is only possible because we are all better off."

She added that the employment market has become highly globalised, which means it "quite commonplace" for people to spend at least a year overseas.

According to the Centre for Future Studies, more than 130,000 Britons are leaving every year in order to find work abroad, reports the Times.
