Growing prosperity fuels migration
British people are increasingly moving abroad because they are more affluent than in the past, an expert has revealed.
Jill Rutter, senior research fellow in the migration team at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), said a record number of people are choosing to relocate each year.
Speaking to the Guardian, she highlighted a number of reasons behind this trend, such as the fact that many now have greater wealth.
She commented: "Prosperity means you have more lifestyle emigrants, [such as] early retirees who move to Spain."
Ms Rutter added that the globalisation of international business has also contributed, as more Britons are now taking jobs in other countries.
According to estimates from the IPPR, more than 5.5 million UK nationals now live abroad on a permanent basis.
This comes after the Centre for Future Studies revealed that more than 130,000 Britons are leaving every year in order to find work abroad, reports the Times.
