Growth in Cyprus economy expected

Cyprus' economy is set to experience further growth throughout the year, according to a new report.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) predicted that the Mediterranean island would see growth of 4.1% during 2008, reports the Cyprus Mail.

This is higher than the average increase of 2.1% that has been forecast across the eurozone as a whole.

PwC said the country's economic growth would be bolstered by its expanding tourist sector, as it had experienced a "solid" summer in 2007.

Yael Selfin, spokesperson for the organisation, commented: "The economic outlook for the Cyprus economy continues to be positive."

He added that the island's recent accession to the single European currency was expected to give it an "additional boost".

Cyprus switched from the pound to the euro at the beginning of this year.

Joaquin Almunia, the EU's monetary affairs commissioner, has congratulated the Cypriots for giving their new currency a "warm welcome".
