Gul 'gets Muslim support'
After gaining support of the European Union, one Turkish presidential election candidate has now received the backing of the former Malaysian deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Mr Ibrahim said that Abdullah Gul is an "inspiration" to the worldwide Muslim community, reports Today's Zaman.
He stated that the politician has done well to offer Muslim democrats hope for the future and that the recent election of the Justice and Development party in Turkey proves that the country is adhering to a "democratising process".
Commenting further, he said that any fears that Turkey is not a good place can be debunked to a certain extent.
"On the contrary I believe a turning point has been reached in Turkey whereby the nation as a whole will reconcile opposing elements embedded in its national psyche and move forward in a positive direction," he told the publication.
Recently, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the military to keep out of the forthcoming next round of presidential elections.
