High demand for flights abroad

The level of demand for overseas flights is still strong, according to newly-released figures.

Data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed that during October, passenger traffic across the world was 7.7% higher than during the previous year.

Although this is lower than the figure recorded a month earlier, the organisation said this showed that demand for flights to other countries was still "robust".

This statement was backed up by the disclosure that during the first 10 months of the year, passenger traffic went up by 7.3%.

Commenting on the findings, IATA director general Giovanni Bisignani remarked: "Passenger demand remains strong, but this is a cyclical industry."

He added that the next few months would be "critical" for the aviation industry, particularly in light of various economic problems such as the credit crunch.

This follows a prediction from the World Tourism Organisation that the foreign travel market would continue to grow steadily in the next few years.
