Hi-tech communications project 'will make Morocco a more attractive investment'

Morocco will become more attractive to companies seeking an offshore base following the completion of a new undersea broadband fibre optic cable running to France, according to one expert.

The Atlas Offshore cable will span Marseille to Asilah, providing Morocco with a hi-tech communications infrastructure that could be of significant benefit to the economy, according to Abdeslam Ahizoune, president of Maroc Telecom.

The Oxford Business Group reports that the line will be able to up to 500,000 simultaneous phone calls and data transfers, while linking the Moroccan telecommunications network into the large European exchanges.

Mr Ahizoune remarked: "The construction of this cable will contribute to consolidating Morocco's position as a leading home base for offshore companies."

He concluded by saying that the fibre optic line would help Morocco to become "more competitive".

Morocco's communication infrastructure has taken a number steps forward in recent months. In April, Itissalat Al Maghrib and Nortel announced plans to install a next-generation broadband network in Rabat and Casablanca.
