Holidaymakers more environmentally-aware
International leisure travellers are increasingly aiming to be more environmentally-friendly when heading abroad, experts have stated.
The Association of British Travel Agents stated that although low-cost flights had opened up many parts of the world, many people were choosing to travel by rail or by sea.
Frances Tuke, spokesperson for the organisation, said ferry travel was gaining popularity because it was seen a much more eco-friendly means of transport.
She commented: "People are thinking very differently about how they travel and so green issues do come to the forefront."
Ms Tuke added that many consumers were also choosing to travel by Eurostar, as it offers a good alternative and a different experience to aircraft.
This could explain why destinations such as France are highly popular with overseas property buyers from the UK, as the country is serviced by both low-cost airlines, ferries and Channel Tunnel rail links.
Eurostar recently launched a high-speed service from London to Paris, which allows people to travel between the two cities in just two hours and 15 minutes.
