Huelva highlighted as an investment opportunity

The Andalucian city of Huelva, which is situated close to the Algarve in Portugal, has been earmarked as a potential area for property investment.

With an international airport due to be completed in the city by 2012, the increased accessibility could open up the region to the rest of Europe, reports the Telegraph.

Describing the city - which is also home to a chapel that was frequented by explorer Christopher Columbus, the Nuestra Senora de le Cinta - the newspaper indicates that property prices are around 40 per cent lower than the Algarve and nearby Costa del Sol.

It adds that the construction of a major airport "may ... stop Huelva from remaining Andalucia's lost corner".

According to Andalucia.com, Huelva has derived most of its wealth from a "flourishing petrochemical industry", which was established by Franco. The website also states that the Rio Tinto pier is one of the city's "greatest architectural monuments".
