Irish consumers flock to sunnier climes

Irish consumers are not allowing rising fuel costs put them off travelling to the sun, it has been revealed.

According to tour operator Sunway Travel, there has been a surge in the number of bookings over the last fortnight.

Tanya Airey, managing director of the firm, has attributed this to a number of factors, such as the increasing price of fuel and the economic slowdown in Ireland.

Speaking to the Sunday Business Post, she added that the recent poor weather has also prompted people to plan their escape to the sun.

Ms Airey commented: "The wet weather and memories of last summer have driven sales in the last 2 weeks."

She stated that even though people are experiencing a number of financial constraints at the moment, a holiday is the one luxury they are unwilling to sacrifice.

This comes after the CBI revealed that consumers in the UK are still booking trips overseas, even though many have been forced to tighten their belts as a result of recent economic problems.
