Irish pensioners move abroad
A growing number of Irish pensioners are choosing to set up home overseas, a newspaper has revealed.
Figures obtained by the Irish Independent revealed that the number of people claiming the state pension abroad went up by 17% last year.
This means that more than 36,000 pensioners from Ireland are now collecting their entitlements in another country.
Italy and France were highlighted as two particularly popular destinations for retirees, along with Portugal and Cyprus.
Spain was identified as another hotspot of activity, especially as the number of pension claimants rose from 187 in 2006 to 299 a year later.
According to the newspaper, retirees who are now living abroad make up 15 per cent of the overall number of Irish nationals receiving a contributory state pension.
This comes after the Exchange Insurance Company stated that people in the UK and Ireland currently own more than 3.8 million homes in other countries.
