Lisbon named as a best-value tourist hotspot
Lisbon has been nominated by a US-based online travel resource as one of Europe's best value and most attractive destinations for travellers with a budget.
SmarterTravel.com points to the strength of euro and rising airfares as reasons why American travellers are finding it more difficult to afford some of Europe's traditional tourist hotspots.
Lisbon has been highlighted by the company as an "affordable and fun" alternative, featuring cheap hotels throughout the seasons and well-priced holiday properties.
Additionally, the Portuguese capital represents an "excellent jumping-off point for other affordable excursions to nearby regions", such as the Estoril Coast, Sintra and the Setubal Peninsula, SmarterTravel.com states.
Anne Banas, executive editor of SmarterTravel.com, remarked: "Fortunately, there are destinations that are still very affordable, and somewhat undiscovered, for travellers looking to avoid the typical tourist experience and save a few dollars."
The company concluded that Lisbon is an "under-priced and on-the-rise" destination.
Recently, the Portuguese government announced that it had made substantial progress in cutting its state budget deficit from 6% in 2005 down to 3.9% in 2006.
