Lonely Planet explores the often overlooked 'cool Istanbul'
While Istanbul is often noted for its ancient Islamic architecture, palaces and awe-inspiring historical artefacts, there is another side to the city that is sometimes overlooked by tourists - namely, 'cool Istanbul'.
The Lonely Planet guide for travellers claims in a new article on Istanbul that there is plenty on display for people looking for something other than the usual historic tourist attractions.
In Nisantasi, visitors can find Istanbul's own fashion quarter, while Istanbul's first museum of contemporary art is also nearby.
Additionally, the guide states that "too few" consider looking at Cukurcuma and Cihangir, where a series of "fascinating shops" and relaxed cafes can be found.
Authors Terry Carter and Lara Dunston write: "Our favorite spot to watch an Istanbul sunset is with the locals-only crowd at On Numara 10, a funky eatery hidden among the fish restaurants under Galata Bridge."
Recent statistics from the Turkish Tourism Investors Foundation revealed that the number of tourists expected to visit Turkey in 2007 should reach 21.4 million, the Today's Zaman newspaper reported.
