Long-haul destinations popular for short breaks
More than one in ten Britons will take a short break to a long-haul destination this year, according to new figures.
Halifax Travel Insurance found that almost 5 million people from the UK are planning to venture outside Europe for a trip lasting less than 7 days.
This is 35% higher than the figure recorded during 2007 - a further sign that international travel is becoming increasingly popular.
The firm highlighted a number of reasons for this growing trend, such as people wanting to escape the British weather and enjoy some sunshine.
In addition, it said that many consumers are heading abroad for a short time as they want to use up this year's remaining holiday entitlement, as their employers are not allowing them to carry their annual leave over until the next year.
Paul Birkhead from Halifax Travel Insurance, commented: "The lure of winter sun, favourable exchange rates and cheaper long-haul flights has created a boom in demand for long-haul mini breaks."
This comes after a study by Holiday Inn found that more than half of all British families do not intend to take a 2-week holiday this summer.
