Low-cost airline reports higher passenger numbers

Low-cost airline Ryanair has reported a surge in passenger numbers over the last 12 months.

The budget carrier carried over 5 million people last month - 20% more than during the same period of the previous year.

This increase, which comes despite deepening economic problems across the world, means that Ryanair transported over 56 million passengers during the year to September 2007.

Commenting on the figures, Stephen McNamara of Ryanair said: "Having achieved record passenger numbers throughout the summer we showed no sign of slowdown in September."

He added that a lot of people who are feeling the pinch in the current economic climate are switching to budget airlines from carriers which charge higher fares.

Meanwhile, easyJet has revealed that in September 2007, monthly passenger numbers rose to 4.2 million.

This is 22% up on the amount recorded a year earlier.
