Mainland Europe 'good for expat families'

Established European destinations have been highlighted as some of the best locations for expat families.

Countries such as Spain, Germany and France were found to be rated very highly by parents who have moved overseas with their children.

The study, carried out by HSBC, said young people living on the continent tend to pick up second languages very easy.

Researchers considered a number of criteria in order to draw their conclusions, including each country's affordability and how much time children spend outdoors.

Spain was rated in first place overall, while France and Germany made it to second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, the UK languished in 13th place.

Aaron le Cornu, deputy chief executive officer for HSBC Bank International, commented: "When people are making the decision to go and take up a life abroad, they are usually thinking about their career development and also 'how will this impact on the development of my children?'"

According to a study commissioned by the British government, nearly three-quarters of 11 to 18-year-olds in the UK would like to live and work overseas.
