Many US tourists 'heading to Croatia as alternative to London and Paris'
Croatia is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists from the US looking to find an alternative to the expensive major west European cities, according to one expert.
With the dollar at its weakest level for many years against the pound and other major currencies, Americans are finding it increasingly expensive to visit places like London and Paris.
As a result, many are looking to Croatia, with the American Automobile Association reporting a 440% rise in bookings - something that may be of interest to property investors thinking of buying accommodation for holiday rental purposes, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Peter Frank, editor of Concierge.com, explained the appeal of Croatia and its major attractions, such as Dubrovnik.
"It's the alternative Riviera. Unspoiled. Beautiful. Great beaches, great food," he remarked.
Croatia's tourism industry could be further boosted in 2009 or 2010 when it is expected to be offered accession into the European Union. Montenegro is also an official candidate for membership.
