Monetenegro and US strengthen relationship with new agreement

Montenegro and the US have signed a new agreement that both parties say will strengthen the ties between them and provide a major boost to the Montenegrin economy.

US military personnel will now be allowed to undertake exercises in Montenegro for "mutually agreed activities", as part of an agreement signed by Filip Vujanovic, president of Montenegro, and Condeleezza Rice, the US secretary of state.

Mr Vujanovic took the opportunity to thank the US for the assistance it has provided over the years in establishing Montenegro as a stable and attractive democracy, adding that he sees the agreement as an opportunity to attract new investment.

"It is our wish to see this friendship also translated into greater presence of US companies in Montenegro - through their participation in privatisations in Montenegro, in greenfield investments and in various forms of economic partnerships," he commented.

Secretary Rice concluded by saying that the US shares Montenegro's ambition to take part in a "Euro-Atlantic" future.

Integration into the European Union has been one of the Montenegrin republic's primary stated objectives since the country's independence from Serbia last year.
