Montenegrin president continues tour of the US
Filip Vujanovic, the president of Montenegro, has continued his tour of the US after signing a military cooperation deal with secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.
The head of state visited Maine shortly afterwards to meet with the state's governor, John Baldacci, to discuss furthering the links between Montenegro and the New England state.
Maine's National Guard has engaged in a partnership programme with the Montenegrin military in what has been described by Mr Baldacci as "just the beginning" of the relationship between the two entities.
He explained: "There are opportunities for cultural and educational exchange programs, for expanded trade and economic ties, and for increased understanding between our people."
President Vujanovic said he welcomed the opportunity to forge closer ties with Maine, not least because of the chance to enhance their economic relationship.
Mr Vujanovic is the first president of Montenegro following the country's independence from Serbia in 2006. He is noted for his refusal to use bodyguards for his everyday personal business.
