Montenegro takes a step closer to joining EU

The EU and Montenegro have signed stabilisation and association agreement that has been hailed as a major milestone in the country's attempt to join the union.

EU enlargement minister Ollie Rehn and the Montenegro prime minister, Zeljko Sturanovic, signed an agreement in Podgorica that promises funding aimed at tackling corruption and organised crime, the Adnkronos International news agency reports.

Mr Sturanovic described the agreement as a "great step forward" towards full integration with Europe, while adding that the country would continue to make progress in achieving this aim.

Trade relations between the EU and Montenegro will also be boosted by the agreement, Mr Rehn commnented.

"Further progress on Montenegro's road to EU will depend on the implementation of the agreement and the struggle against corruption and organised crime and based on the reforms of judiciary and administrative capacities," he remarked.

Recently, Bar, a municipality in Montenegro, announced plans to build new facilities worth approximately €500 million (£342 million).

The developments will see Bar become a "modern European town", according to the Visit-Montenegro website.
