Montenegro's planning laws set to change

The government in Montenegro has begun moves to ease the country's stringent planning regulations, it has emerged.

At present, obtaining permission to build either residential or commercial buildings can involve multiple court cases and often takes longer than a year, reports Vijesti.

The newspaper noted: "Numerous investors and property owners in Montenegro have been prevented from building tourist and tenancy objects due to complicated and lengthy procedures to obtain licenses."

However, that could soon change as the ministry for economic development has proposed a new spatial planning law intended to simplify the procedure.

If approved, the new regulations would reduce the number of licence hearings involved in obtaining planning permission and allow local authorities to rule on more development applications.

The ministry claims the change will make it much easier for investors to gain the necessary permits to build property.

News of the change in regulations comes just days after the Montenegro Times reported that demand for property in the country from Russian buyers is rising.
