More Britons buying second homes abroad

The number of UK nationals who own a second home overseas has gone up significantly in the last few years, new figures have revealed.

Official data published in Country Life magazine revealed that 248,000 Britons now own a foreign property.

This is up from 115,000 a decade ago, which means overseas property ownership in the UK has more than doubled since then.

Commenting on the figures, Country Life noted that much of the increase has taken place in the last three years.

The publication added that the overseas market had seen a higher rate of growth than the domestic second home sector.

During the last ten years, the number of people with an alternative residence in the UK has not changed significantly, going up from 200,000 to 241,000.

Earlier this month, a study by Holiday-Rentals found that nine out of ten overseas property owners from Britain have invested in Europe.
