More Britons taking holidays in Turkey

Tourism officials in Turkey have observed an increase in the number of holidaymakers from the UK.

According to the Turkish Hoteliers Federation, the surge in the country's popularity among Britons this year has exceeded expectations.

Speaking to TurkishPress.com, chairman Ahmet Barut said visitor numbers from the UK are currently 17 per cent up on the amount recorded last year.

This has been partly attributed to various financial issues across Europe, such as the high value of the euro against the pound.

Mr Barut commented: "Such interest of British travellers stem from the fact that Europe is now much more expensive for them."

He added that the weakness of the pound against the single European currency has "helped" the Turkish tourism sector.

This comes after the Association of British Travel Agents revealed that the number of summer bookings for trips to Turkey has gone up by 20 per cent this year.
