More people set to visit Cyprus

Officials in Cyprus have predicted that the number of foreign arrivals will grow in the next 12 months.

The Cyprus Tourism Organsiation (CTO) stated that visitor numbers in 2008 could be about 10% higher than those recorded this year, reports Travel and Tourism News.

According to the organisation, the island has become a highly popular holiday destination because it is relatively close to other European countries and offers a variety of attractions for tourists.

The CTO has estimated that this year's number of visitors will come to about 55,000, although it has confirmed that plans to increase this amount further have been prepared.

Vassilis Theocharides, director of the body, commented: "The new initiatives in store for the new year will be more joint campaigns with airlines flying to Cyprus across the Middle East."

The comments come less than a month before the island's entry into the single European currency.
