More tourists head to Morocco

The Moroccan government appears to be succeeding with its drive to boost tourism in the country.

Tourism and craft industry minister Mohamed Boussaid told local media that 7.45 million foreign leisure travellers visited Morocco in 2007.

Speaking to the Maghreb Arabe Presse, he said this was 13% higher than the figure recorded a year earlier.

This means that rental accommodation in Morocco will have seen higher levels of demand than during the previous year, potentially creating opportunities for overseas property investors in popular tourist areas.

Mr Boussaid added that the tourist industry generated £3.9 billion for the Moroccan economy and helped to create many new jobs.

This helps to illustrate the importance of tourism to the country and its economic stability and why the government has placed so much emphasis on boosting the sector further.

Efforts are currently underway to attract ten million holidaymakers to Morocco by 2010.

According to the UN World Tourism Organisation, visitor numbers in Africa as a whole rose by 6% last year to 44 million.
