Moroccan transport to get -ú1.3b injection

A high-speed rail link proposed to run between Tangier and Morocco's commercial capital Casablanca will cut travel times and add to an overall improved infrastructure, Morocco's transport minister has said.

The plan is one of many that will cost in excess of an estimated £8 billion overall and include improving roads, ports and airports.

Development of existing infrastructure will bolster the country's economy, Reuters reports.

Transport minister Karim Ghellab said that the rail link would slash journey times from five hours and 45 minutes to just over two hours.

"The high-speed train line would carry eight million passengers a year after it starts in 2013," he added.

Tourism investment in the east of Morocco experienced a massive increase between 2005 and 2006, news provider Magharebia stated recently.

A survey by the commerce, industry and services chamber showed a jump from around £11.25 million in 2005 to some £165 million the following year.
