Morocco demonstrates increased tourism growth for start of 2007
Moroccan authorities have reported a significant upturn in the number of tourists entering the country for the first 4 months of 2007, with airports also claiming increased traffic, a new report has stated.
The Moroccan department of tourism said around 1.8 million people visited the country during the first third of 2007, with Britons accounting for 144,000 of this total.
This makes UK nationals the third-most prevalent visitors to Morocco after the French and Spanish - both nationalities with long-standing historical connections with the north African country.
Maghreb Arabe Presse, a news agency, reported that Marrakech remains top of the tourist destination pile, followed by Casablanca and Agadir in second and third respectively.
Some 80% of tourist overnight stays were held between these three cities, the report said.
In March, the same news provider revealed that tourist numbers have grown by almost 70% in the last 5 years. Morocco aims to achieve a figure of 10 million tourists a year by 2010.
