Morocco named as one of the decade's top destinations

Morocco has been named the top short to mid haul holiday destination of the decade by the Association of Independent Tour Operators.

The organisation cites the country's Vision 2010 plan, introduced by King Mohammed VI in 2001, which produced a 400% rise in the number of tourists visiting the country in 2008 compared to 2000.

Steve Diederich, vice president of UK sales & operations for Travelzest Plc, said: " Ten years ago the short break really took off: and, after Paris and Madrid, the exotic appeal of Marrakech suddenly registered.

Just three hours away existed a cultural vortex - a land of souks, sorcerers, spas and sun, and a very cost-effective one at that."

He added that Morocco has a lot to offer beyond Marrakech, including ski resorts, beaches and golf courses.

The Move Channel recently reported that there has been an increase in investment interest for Moroccan properties, as UK buyers choose to focus on emerging markets. It said that people will make the best returns from off-plan properties currently in development.
