Older expats urged to research new home

Britons who are planning to spend their retirement years abroad have been advised to find out as much they can about their new home.

According to Age Concern, many people from the UK find that retiring to another country can be a "great" experience.

However, the charity has stated that expats are more likely to enjoy their new lives if they research their destination of choice in advance.

This, it said, is because people need to be aware of practical considerations, such as the provision of public services in their prospective home.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, told the Bournemouth Echo that this is particularly important for retirees, as they may need medical treatment at some point in the future.

He commented: "Thinking ahead about your situation changing and what health and social care services and benefits will be available may help people to avoid potential problems."

Shelter Offshore recently reported that the European Union is currently considering proposals to allow EU residents access to free medical care in all member states.

The website said this "bodes well" for would-be expats who are thinking of retiring abroad.
