People go abroad to mark significant dates

Many people are taking foreign trips to commemorate significant events, according to a new poll.

Research by Expedia.co.uk found that three-quarters of Britons had gone abroad to either celebrate a milestone such as a wedding anniversary or to recover from a personal trauma.

The study also showed that while the average trip overseas cost people less than £500, 1 in 3 were spending more than £1,000 on holidays intended to mark special occasions.

Wedding anniversaries were said to be one of the main milestones that people celebrated overseas, with couples choosing to go to destinations such as Venice.

Meanwhile, Paris was found to be the favoured location for newly-engaged couples, while people getting over a bereavement or divorce tended to go Spain.

This could be good news for overseas property investors in these areas, as they could get people staying in rental accommodation outside of the peak holiday season.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents, August and Christmas are the busiest times of the year for the holiday industry.
