Planned arts centre 'will put Cyprus on the cultural map'

Plans for a new arts centre that will place Cyprus "on the cultural map" and significantly aid the country's social, economic and tourist industries have been announced by the Cyprus Cultural Foundation (CCF).

The venue will feature an education centre, exhibitions and a 1,400 seated arena for musical performance, while it is expected to be completed in time for Cyprus' EU presidency in 2012, at a cost of £50 million.

The claims followed the news that Hopkins Architects of London have been successful in their bid to design the Nicosia-based arts centre, chosen because their vision reflects the "dynamic sensitivity of the plan".

Kikis N Lazarides, chairman of the foundation, was quoted by the Financial Mirror as saying: "The Cyprus Cultural Centre is now taking a specific shape and we are now entering the final stretch in Cyprus acquiring what it deserves, a modern temple of art and culture."

The CCF's figurehead concluded by saying that the arts centre would "constitute a testimony for style" and become a "modern temple of art and culture".

Cyprus will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time between July and December 2012.
