Popularity of pre-Christmas shopping tourism to grow?

Buy-to-let property investors could benefit from an increase in people heading abroad in the run-up to Christmas.

According to Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, a growing number of Brits are going overseas for their pre-holiday shopping.

Turkey is one popular choice, he explained, as "budget-minded" tourists journey to Istanbul in an attempt to avoid the high prices seen in the eurozone and pick up distinctive, quality products.

Britons may also be heading to Morocco in greater numbers, as Mr Hall remarked: "Marrakech offers some winter sunshine and great shopping with a dash of the exotic."

It comes after the Independent published a list of ideal destinations for anyone planning a pre-Christmas shopping trip abroad, with both Marrakech and Istanbul being named in the top ten.

Another destination proposed by Mr Hall was Buenos Aires, as its "fantastic food and favourable southern hemisphere weather" appeal to those seeking a long-haul break.
