President 'could be announced soon'
Abdullah Gul is on the verge of becoming the new head of state in Turkey, nearer to the end of the month, according to reports.
Mr Gul, from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), should be elected during the third round of voting, reports the Turkish Daily News.
The deadline for submitting candidacy nominations for the presidential election is August 19th, the publication stated.
Currently the foreign minister, Mr Gul was almost elected in April but was stopped from doing so by the military in Turkey.
"I saw the support of my friends in my party and I announced my candidacy," he commented.
He now has the support of 250 deputies at the AKP party and has made his official application.
Earlier this week, prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that a new cabinet was going to be announced on Thursday (August 16th).
This was according to deputy prime minister Mehmet Ali Sahin.
