Programme to 'improve Bulgaria'

Many aspects of Bulgaria look set to be improved after it was announced that the Bulgarian regional development and public works ministry is to begin its latest operational programme.

The programme will look at how to improve the overall quality of life in the country and to make services more accessible, reports the Sofia Echo.

In addition, this should increase competitiveness between different regions in the country, it said.

Such a project is aiming to cover the years between 2007 and 2013, with an overall budget of 1.6 billion euros (£1.0 billion).

The European commission is expected to approve the programme later on in the year, in September.

Other amendments include general improvements to the country's infrastructure, libraries and airports. Reconstruction of roads will also form part of the plan during its second phase.

In related news, the minimum wage in Bulgaria is set to be raised, according to the government.
