Queen supports Turkey's EU bid
Queen Elizabeth II has expressed her support for Turkey's efforts to join the European Union.
The country's planned bid to become a member of the international body has already been backed by the British government, although countries including France and Austria have so far opposed the move.
However, the monarch said that in the 36 years since her last visit, Turkey has evolved into a "confident" and "dynamic" democracy.
Speaking at the start of a four-day state visit, she added that joining the EU could be a positive development for the country.
The Queen commented: "The prospect of joining the European Union has already helped to inspire changes that are improving the lives of its citizens."
She added that Turkey is "uniquely" positioned as a bridge between the east and west during a "crucial" period in world history.
Foreign secretary David Miliband, another advocate of Turkey's EU entry, is travelling as part of the British delegation.
