Rain drives Irish consumers abroad

Concerns over a wet summer have prompted a large number of Irish consumers to book their holidays well in advance.

Travel agents across the country have reported that a surge in the amount of bookings for summer holidays abroad, according to the Meath Chronicle.

The news provider spoke to representatives of numerous holiday firms, many of whom cited dismal weather conditions as a major reason for getting foreign trips arranged early.

Trisha O'Reilly of Kells Travel said that lots of people missed out on going abroad last year, since the "dreadful, protracted" rain led to massive demand for last-minute breaks.

Speaking to the newspaper, she stated that people were ensuring their plans were in place this year in order to avoid being caught out again.

Travel firms added that although countries such as Spain and Portugal were still highly popular, long-haul destinations were also attracting more visitors.

A similar trend in the UK was recently highlighted by the Association of British Travel Agents.

The organisation also revealed that many people were choosing to escape the poor winter weather by heading abroad during January.
