Record number of Brits book trips abroad
A record number of Britons chose to book trips abroad last Monday, according to a travel firm.
Alpharooms.com stated that internet booking sites had been bombarded with enquiries from consumers at the beginning of the week.
Gareth Hockey, online marketing manager at the company, said this was due to people experiencing "post-holiday blues" in the wake of the festive season.
He commented: "January is traditionally a peak booking time for summer holidays, but Monday saw unprecedented levels of enquiries and bookings."
Mr Hockey added that people in the UK were very keen to guarantee that they would be able to enjoy good weather this year following the torrential downpours last summer.
The surge in the number of people booking foreign holidays had been predicted earlier this week by the Association of British Travel Agents.
Monday was dubbed "Holiday Day" by the organisation in anticipation of the rush.
