Regional airport records further growth

A regional airport in the UK is continuing to see an increase in passenger numbers, new figures have revealed.

East Midlands Airport (EMA) stated that during January 2008, more than 340,000 people passed through its gates.

This is 15.8% higher than the figure recorded 12 months earlier - an indication of the growing popularity of air travel from regional transport hubs.

The figures could also be interpreted as a sign that the destinations serviced by the airport are becoming increasing popular.

EMA currently offers passage to numerous countries across the world, including the European hotspots of Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Penny Coates, managing director of the facility, welcomed the figures, commented: "This is a tremendous start to the year and we are hopeful that the momentum will continue throughout 2008."

She added that the statistics also showed that EMA was currently meeting the needs of passengers living in the region and beyond.
