Rising fuel costs 'will not stop people flying'

Consumers in the UK will not stop flying as a result of rising fuel prices, according to industry experts.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said it was inevitable that increased costs would impact on the price of flying abroad.

However, the organisation stated that this does not mean people will start to find foreign travel unaffordable.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA, commented: "If you look at the bookings of our members, they are healthy; they are not down."

He added that airlines are currently feeling the pinch after consistent rises in the price of aviation fuel, which means they have to pass this on to the customer.

Mr Tipton was speaking after British Airways (BA) raised its fuel surcharges for the second time in a month.

This move has been criticised by low-cost airline Ryanair, which has accused BA of "ripping off" its customers.
