Romanian castle and tourist attraction returned to ex-king
One of Romania's major tourist attractions, the Peles Castle, has been returned to its former resident and ex-monarch, King Michael.
King Michael lost Peles Castle abdicated in 1947 as the then-communist government announced its intention to become a people's republic.
For many years, the residence has served as a major tourist attraction that includes a museum - something that could continue if the authorities agree, Reuters reports.
Andrew Popper, representative for King Michael, remarked: "This is a historical moment, a symbolic one that marks Romania's return to the family of nations who recognise the sacredness of private property ... it backs national reconciliation."
If it is agreed that the Peles castle should remain as a museum, the king will sell the property back to the state so its public use can continue.
King Michael lived in London after his abdication, before moving to Switzerland for a number of decades. Up until the early 1990s, the former monarch was not allowed to visit Romania.
