Romanian economy tipped to grow next year

Romania's gross domestic product (GDP) has been tipped to go up by at least 4% next year, it has been reported.

According to Financiarul, a group of analysts met with Romanian prime minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu to discuss how the global economic crisis is likely to affect the country in the short term.

Although they could not reach a consensus on the likely extent of economic growth in 2009, they were unanimous in the belief that expansion would still take place.

Indeed, some said they are expecting an increase of as much as 6% next year.

Mr Tariceanu commented: "The average between optimists and pessimists would be 5%, which, in the context of a world economic crisis, is a very good performance."

The meeting formed part of the government's efforts to come up with ways of mitigating the impact of external problems on Romania's economy.

This comes after an adviser to the Romanian government hailed the performance of its economy amid the current financial turmoil.

Rasvan Orasanu told Reuters that the market in the eastern European country is "buoyant" and proving to be highly resilient to external problems.
