Romanian tourist industry will be 'fastest growing in Europe'
Growing numbers of visitors to Romania are backing up predictions made last year that Romania would have one of the fastest growing tourism industries in Europe.
World Travel & Tourism Council predicted a 7.9 per cent annual growth in tourism until 2015, putting Romania fourth in global tourism growth.
However, the latest research indicates that the numbers of visits to Romania in December increased by 20 per cent on last year's figures for the same month.
An e-mail from the Romanian Institute of National Statistics claimed that 520,000 people visited the country in December, and only 43 per cent of them came from EU countries.
Romania joined the EU in January and the government pledged to invest Ôé¼325 million in tourism by the end of this year.
The money will be used to market Romania's natural assets more effectively, spending on nature trails, recreational ports, the diversion of mineral waters for spas and beach-cleaning initiatives.
Romania's GDP is up from $204,412 last year to $218,926, according to Euromonitor, and last year, it brought in $589 million in tourism receipts.
