Senior citizens travel outside Europe

Older people are becoming increasingly keen to venture beyond European shores, experts have revealed.

According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), senior citizens are travelling overseas more than ever.

However, many are apparently shunning traditional destinations such as France, Spain and the Republic of Ireland in favour of more exotic countries.

The organisation stated that non-European locations such as the Middle East are becoming highly popular with this demographic.

Derek Moore, chairman of AITO, commented: "The older generation are travelling more.

"Now they are becoming a bit more adventurous with their holidays."

Mr Moore added that destinations in Africa are also proving to be attractive destinations among this age group, in particular countries such as Morocco.

According to official figures, there was a 2% increase in the number of trips abroad undertaken by British consumers during the year to July 2008.
