Skiing holidays 'growing in popularity'

The number of people travelling abroad for skiing holidays is continuing to increase, according to new research.

A study by the Ski Club of Great Britain found that more than 1.31 million winter sports fans were going overseas to indulge their hobby this year, mainly to destinations such as France and Italy.

This is 3.4 per cent more than during the previous year, largely due to many people taking short weekend breaks abroad, as well as week-long holidays.

Caroline Stuart-Taylor, chief executive of Ski Club, commented: "We are not surprised the market has risen again as many people are looking for more from their holiday.

"Skiing or boarding fits the bill perfectly."

She added that this trend had partially been driven by the growth of the internet and low-cost aviation.

Last week, the Association of British Travel Agents stated that France had overtaken Austria in terms of its popularity among skiers.

The country's appeal as a winter holiday location may prove to be an attractive inducement for people thinking of investing the French property market.
