'Space Tower' becomes Spain's tallest
The new Torre Espacio - or Space Tower - has become the tallest skyscraper in Spain after it reached its final height following several months of construction.
With a fireworks display intended to commemorate the event, the Madrid skyscraper reached its final 57-storey height earlier this week and it is expected to be complete later this year.
The mayor of Madrid was also in attendance at the opening of the building, which will house between 2,000 and 3,000 employees and offer sky-lobbies and restaurants, the ThinkSpain website reports.
Previously, the Gran Hotel Bali in Benidorm held the title of Spain's tallest building, at 180m in height.
The Torre Espacio forms part of a large four-skyscraper development in the Ciucad Deportivo district of the city, which will incorporate an even taller building, the Torre Repsol.
Designed by Sir Norman Foster, the building will act as the headquarters for the Repsol YPF petroleum company.
