Spain 'is retirees' favourite destination'

Spain is the most popular country among retirees who are relocating abroad, new research has found.

Over-50s specialist Saga highlighted a number of factors that made it an appealing destination for expats, such as its practicality and value for money, reports Homes Worldwide.

The company said that although both Spain and the UK had experienced a property boom in recent years, people could get more for their money by moving abroad.

Chris Simmonds, managing director of Saga Overseas Homes, commented: "Many people are finding that their money still goes a lot further on the Mediterranean coast and they can have a new and idyllic home in the sun."

In addition, the accessibility of Spain provided by budget air carriers was cited as a major factor behind its popularity.

Saga said that since the country was well-serviced by cheap flights from the UK, friends and relatives at home were still in easy reach.

According to the Office for National Statistics, more than 55,000 British people are currently drawing their pension in Spain.
